Initial Questions and Requirements
What are the requirements for entering the pageant?
TEEN USA DIVISION: You are eligible to apply for the Teen USA Division if you meet the following criteria:
Female (recognized medically and legally in the U.S.)
U.S. citizen and resident of Indiana
At least 14 but under 19 as of January 1, 2025
Never married, had a marriage annulled, or given birth
Not a parent, guardian, or currently pregnant
USA DIVISION: You are eligible to apply for the USA Division if you meet the following criteria:
Female (recognized medically and legally in the U.S.)
U.S. citizen and resident of Indiana
Minimum age of 18 (the Miss Universe Organization no longer has an age cap for this division)
Do I need pageant experience to compete?
No! Many of our contestants are newcomers with little or no previous pageant experience.
Do I need to win a preliminary pageant to compete?
No, you don’t need to win a preliminary title or have any previous pageant experience to participate. However, you can gain valuable experience with an official Local USA title. The local USA titles are an option to every contestant and awarded by the state office.
Is there a talent portion in the competition?
No, there is no talent portion. The competition consists of three scored categories: Interview, Activewear (TEEN USA) or Swimsuit (USA), and Evening Gown.
Is age a factor in winning the pageant?
No, judges are not directed to consider age when selecting a winner. Age only determines your division.
Are there height or weight requirements to enter?
No, there are no height or weight requirements. Judges will evaluate physical fitness, which includes a healthy and fit body. Our contestants come in all shapes and sizes!
What qualities are you looking for in a winner?
We seek a well-rounded, confident individual who will represent Indiana at both the state and national MISS USA® and Miss Teen USA® pageants.
What happens after I submit the online form?
Once your form is submitted, it will be reviewed by our committee. If you are selected as a potential candidate, our office will reach out to schedule a brief 3-5 minute call. You will also receive an email notification with additional information.
Is there an entry fee, and how much is it?
Yes, the participation fee includes your entry fee, access to free training workshops (sign up early to take advantage of the sessions that happen a few months prior to the state pageant). Entry fees help cover event production and your involvement throughout the year, with suggestions to help secure sponsorships provided upon acceptance.
What prizes and scholarships are available?
Prizes and awards vary each year based on our generous sponsors. For full details on the impressive prize package, please refer to the list of prizes in the interest packet. As part of the prize package, the winner will have their full entry fee to the national pageant covered, along with transportation, shared accommodations, and organized meals. Additionally, the winner's competition wardrobe—interview, fitness, and evening gown—will be provided by sponsors.
How many contestants typically compete in the state pageant?
The number of contestants can vary. Some years, there are more Teen USA contestants, while in others, the Miss USA division has more participants.
What are my travel and lodging responsibilities?
You’re responsible for your own travel and lodging. We recommend staying at the host hotel, where we’ll reserve a special room block. Our state titleholders, many of staff, and VIP guests all stay at the host hotel. To gain the full experience, we suggest staying at the host hotel.
What do my supporters need to know about tickets and other expenses?
All attendees must purchase tickets to the shows, but contestants do not need tickets. Program books, photo packages, and videos will be available for purchase throughout the weekend. Seating is limited, we suggest to purchase tickets as early as possible. The program books tend to sell out before the final show. Make sure to get yours early.
What responsibilities come with winning the title?
The amount of time you spend making appearances varies depending on your location and availability. Your education and family are a priority, so we work with your schedule. Appearances may include parades, speaking engagements, and working with various organizations throughout the state.
What if I have tattoos or piercings?
Tattoos and piercings are fine. If you’re concerned they might be a distraction, consider covering them with makeup or choosing appropriate outfits. Judges will not negatively view you based on tattoos or piercings.
Sponsorship & Paperwork Information
How can I secure sponsors?
You can seek sponsors from family, friends, local businesses, organizations, or anyone outside your area. We provide resources to help you secure sponsorships upon acceptance.
What happens if I raise more money than required?
Any additional funds can go toward other expenses like wardrobe or Spotlight Ads in the program book.
What should I do if a sponsor gives me cash?
If you receive cash, please convert it to a money order or personal check before sending it. Do not mail cash.
Why is a report card or transcript needed?
This is used if a teen contestant needs verify state residency. The judges will not see it, and your academic performance will not affect your chances.
What happens if I miss a deadline?
Deadlines are essential, but we understand that unexpected circumstances can arise. Contact us if you need an extension.
What type of photo should I submit for my headshot?
Submit a professional, “head and shoulders” style photo. Ensure the background is distraction-free and the image is at least 300 dpi.
What are Spotlight Ads?
Spotlight Ads are special pages in the program book that give you extra visibility. These ads are optional and cost $250 per page. You can reserve up to 10 pages.
Pageant Weekend Information
What are the scoring criteria and wardrobe requirements?
Interview:
The selection committee (panel of judges) evaluates your personality, communication skills, and overall presence. Teen contestants should have fun with their outfit choices, while Miss contestants are encouraged to choose a more sophisticated look.Swimsuit (USA Division):
Miss delegates will wear the official swimsuit of the state USA pageant, with the option of selecting either a one-piece or two-piece swimsuit. Contestants must provide their own shoes and a sarong.Activewear (TEEN USA Division):
Teens will wear the official form-fitting activewear (crop top and leggings) and must provide their own tennis shoes.Evening Gown:
The selection committee focuses on poise, overall appearance, and style. Choose an evening gown that reflects your personal style and makes you feel confident on stage.Opening Outfit:
All contestants are required to provide an outfit for the opening of the show. The details for the opening attire vary from year to year, so please refer to the contestant handbook for the specific requirements for this year’s show.
Do I need separate gowns for prelims and finals?
No, you can wear the same gown for both prelims and finals.
What should my family and friends wear?
We suggest attire ranging from business casual to formal for both the preliminaries and finals.
Can I be assisted backstage during the pageant?
No outside assistance is allowed backstage, and contestants must be prepared to be self-sufficient for hair, makeup, and wardrobe.
When will this year’s contestants be posted online?
Photos will be posted approximately one week prior to the pageant.
Can we record the pageant?
No videotaping is allowed, but you can purchase official photo and video packages from our official production teams.
